Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of suspended loads such as but not limited to over-the-road transport trailers being lifted by 4 inch wide X 16 foot long nylon slings without wear pads or protection at sharp edges or where the slings make 90 degree turns which create point loading: On or About November 26, 2002, two 4 inch wide X 16 foot long nylon slings used to hoist two over-the-road trailers weighing a combined weight of 12,450 pounds attached to a four legged wire rope bridle sling connected to the main hook of a Deutsche Grove 5100, 100 ton rough terrain crane were not provided with wear pads or protection at the sharp 90 degree turns at the outside rails of the trailers. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard would be to install wear pads or protection on the slings at the 90 degree sharp edges of the metal trailers while hoisting the trailers with nylon slings.
