Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to injury while cutting materials which were unstably placed: SCRAP YARD: Workers torch cutting steel girders measuring 40 feet long by 5 feet wide into smaller pieces were exposed to injury in that the girder was propped against concrete barriers and was not stabilized to prevent movement. On or about 4/4/01, a worker was injured when a steel girder he was standing on and cutting down the length of the girder shifted and caused him to fall onto the ground. Among others, one feasible means of abatement would be to ensure that all pieces to be cut up are adequately stabilized and to get supervisory approval prior to beginning the process.
