Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of first and second degree burns while cutting laminated glass: SHOP: The employer did not ensure through a visual observation, instruction and training that the employees were handling the flammable liquid, combustible material and the ignition source respectively and appropriately during the process of cutting, scoring and handling of the laminated glass. On or about January 3, 2007, the flammable liquid and combustible material were ignited while an employee was performing the above tasks, and the employee sustained first and second degree burns to the left hand and leg and lower abdomen area from the incident. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct the hazard is to: 1) Establish and implement proper handling the above material during the tasks. 2) Train and give appropriate information to employees required to do the above tasks. 3) Utilize Specially designed and manufactured equipment for the above task(s). 4) Replace the ignition source ( cigarette lighters) with non-flame producing tools. 5) Utilize other effective and safe methods available.
