Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CUTS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to injury while cutting steel beams. Worksite (scrap yard): An employee torch cutting steel girders measuring 45 feet in length and 5 feet wide into a smaller pieces suffered serious injuries when the one of the pieces that measured 32 feet in length and 32" long flipped backward and landed on his leg. Among others, one feasible means of abatement would be appropriate training which should include hazard assessment and the correct methods to cut large heavy pieces of metal.
