Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being caught in a conveyor system: (a) Coke Handling, Metallurgical Screening Station, M-2, 36 inch conveyor belt line; Emergency stop buttons, pull cords, limit switches or other similar emergency stop devices were not installed on remotely and/or automatically controlled conveyors, and conveyors where the operator stations were not manned and were beyond voice or visual contact from the drive areas, loading areas, transfer points, and other hazardous locations. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to install emergency pull cords. In addition, an improved belt dressing applicator, utilizing a garden type sprayer, could be used to apply belt dressing.
