Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to press brake point of operation crushing hazards: (a) Shop, Press Brake Area, North End - On September 22, 1999, an employee was working at the Chicago hydraulic press brake, Serial Number 107575. The food pedal control was not protected from accidental actuation. This condition last existed on September 23, 1999. Among other methods, one feasible and useful method to correct this hazard is to follow ANSI B.11.3 - 1982 - Section 4.3.4.3 which states "A foot control, if used, shall be protected so as to inhibit accidental actuation by falling or moving objects, or by someone stepping on it." 1. Install a guard around the foot control to prevent accidental actuation. No abatement certification or documentation is required for this item.
