Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employmnent and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a)At the jobsite: Employees were exposed to the hazard of serious crushing injuries from Weaver Hydraulic Car Lifts. The safety locking devices and safety poles were missing from two lifts making them inoperative. The lifts were Bay No. 1 and Bay No. 2 lifts respectively. Feasible and acceptable methods among others to correct the hazard is to: 1)Instruct and train employees in the proper use of mechanical safety locking devices & poles for hydraulic car lifts. 2)Conduct periodic inspections of the lifts as recommended by the lift manufacturer to insure that the safety locking devices and poles and all other components are in safe operating condition. 3)Post manufacturers' operating manual in the service area for informaton and reference. 4)The employer had not rendered his workplace free from the hazard of hydraulic lifts not being properly inspected or maintained. Safety devices on lifts were not in place and operational. These are necessary to hold the lift in event of air cylinder failure. This hazard is reasonably forseeable. The lack of safety devices is a recognized industry hazard. Reference ANSI B153.1 Safety Requirements on Lifts. A search of the OSHA Standards has been conducted and there are no applicable standards.
