Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a)1/17/96 At Steve's Autoworks employees were exposed to the hazard of serious crushing injuries from the dropping of hydraulic automotive lifts or vehicles falling off the lifts, while employees were working under vehicles on the lifts. (1)Lift #1: Safety locking devices were not operational and 3 of the arm restraints were missing. (2)Lift #2: 2 arm restraints were missing. (3)Lift #3: 1 arm restraint was missing. Feasible and acceptable means of abatement among others to correct the hazard is: a) Repair the safety cable on lift #1 that is part of the original equipment. b) Repair or replace the arm restraints that are missing on each lift. c) Conduct periodic inspections of the lifts as recommended by the lift manufacturer to insure that the safety cables and arm restraints and all other equipment are in safe operating condition.
