Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CHEMICAL
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that: a.The employer did insure a drying process was in place that insured all metal parts were completely dry prior to there being lowered into a high temperature salt bath. This exposes employees to the severe burn hazards associated with being struck by ejected molten salt. It is common industry practice to insure metal being heat treated is devoid of moisture. Historically, steam explosions caused by the introduction of moisture into molten metal or high temperature chemicals are a highly recognized hazard in these type of industries. Feasible mean of abatement such as but not limited too pre-heating the metal to be treated to insure all moisture is removed would be acceptable. Certification, and documentation/evidence of abatement is required. Certification of abatement is required by 29 CFR Part 1903 and is to be submitted within ten (10) calendar days after the abatement date.ment
