Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: ...crushing injuries because hydraulic floor lifts did not have safety devices to prevent the lifts from dropping. Mechanics at Bob Weaver Buick were exposed to the hazard of being struck and/or crushed by the raised vehicles while working under the vehicle on hydraulic automotive lifts in the service area. The hydraulic lifts did not have safety devices to hold the lift in the fully extended position as required by the American National Standard (ANSI) B153.1 - 1974. Feasible and effective abatement can be expected to include, but is not limited to: 1)Retro fit lifts with safety devices. 2)Replace the hydraulic lifts with newer ones that have safety devices. 3)Use jack stands placed under the lift support arms or under the vehicle's frame for support.
