Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of a falling load: On the mezzanine area of the 3000 line, employee(s) are required to untie the strings on the bags of ADM/Ogilve starch, weighing 1180 kilograms, while it is suspended in the air by a Demag chain hoist. While the strings are untied, the employee(s) arm's are between the bags of starch and the stainless steel hopper and are subjected to this crushing hazard in the event of a hoist failure or a failure in the webbing of the bag. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to construct and install a guarded area between the bags of starch and the hopper. This guarded area shall be strong enough to withstand the full weight of the load in the event of a hoist failure or a failure in the webbing of the bags.
