Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being struck by the hoist and/or loads falling off of the hoist, in that: (a)The hook latch on the 1/2 ton Coffing Hoist located in the milk receiving area was bent and the spreader bar used to lift electric batteries from powered industrial trucks was not marked to ensure that it could safely lift and maintain the load. Among feasible abatement method to correct the hazards, replace the latch on the hook in the milk receiving area, ensure that the spreader bar(s) used to lift batteries contained the manufacturer's name and address, serial number, and the rated load to ensure that the spreader bar is capable of lifting loads such as batteries and to conduct periodic and frequent inspections of all the hoists, hooks and below-the-hook attachments to ensure the hoist, hooks and below the hook attachments are free from recognized hazards as required by ASME B30.20c-1998, addenda to ASME B30.20-1993 for Below-the Hook lifting devices, by ASME B30-10-1993 Hooks and as required by ASME B30.16-1993 Overhead Hoists (Underhung).
