29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): One or more methods of machine guarding was not provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks: a) On or about January 31, 2017 the employer failed to ensure that effective guarding was in place on the in feed rollers of the steel coil entry area. Barrier guarding was not in place to protect employees from contact with the rollers. b) On or about January 31, 2017 the employer failed to ensure that effective guarding was in place on the take up reel portion of the slitter line. Employees were not protected from the ingoing nip point of the reels and coils. Additionally employees were not protected from the movement of the coils. c) On or about January 31, 2017 the employer failed to ensure that effective guarding was in place on the hot metal slag coil of the short run weld mill. d) On or about January 31, 2017 the employer failed to ensure that effective guarding was in place on the chamfer machine. Effective chip guards were not in place to protect employees from chips and sparks. The employer used cardboard in place of conventional guarding mechanisms.
