Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CHEMICAL
Section 5 (a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing of likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards of chemical overexposure and/or explosive detonation from incompatible chemical storage in the lab: (a) Approximately 250 milliliters of 10sodium cyanide solution was stored in the same cabinet as 50 sulfuric acid. The inadvertent mixing of these chemicals would result in the formation of cyanide gas. (b) Approximately 400 grams of sodium cyanide was stored in the same cabinet as acidic black dye solution. The inadvertent mixing of these chemicals would result in the formation of cyanide gas. (c) Approximately 1 liter of glacial acetic acid was stored in the same cabinet as 2 liters of 70nitric acid. The inadvertent mixing of these chemicals would result in explosive detonation and/or fire.
