Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards of serious crushing injuries to employees working and walking inside and outside of recycling building and thru south door to south wall by backing up truck trailers where blind spots exist. Employees are required to separate by hand debris from recyclable wood dumped at the south wall. Employees walk in and out of building in close proximity to backing up truck trailers are not protected by a spotter directing backing up trailer to proceed safely. Back up alarms sometimes are not heard: a- Some feasible and reasonable abatement methods are, among others: 1- Always use a helper where blind spots exist. 2- Always use a helper to clear work area of employees before backing your trailer. 3- The helper shuold stand near the back of the truck trailer where you can see the helper. Before backing up work out a set of hand signals that you both understand. Agree on a signal for stop. 4- Retrain all truckers with back up requirements with standard hand signals.
