Section 5(a)1 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing hazards from vehicles that are backing: On or about April 15, 2003, an employee was riding on the back of, or was standing to the rear of, a sanitation truck while it was backing out of a residential driveway onto a two-way highway. Employee was exposed to crushing injuries from the moving vehicle. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to enforce compliance with American National Standard for Refuse Collection, Processing and Disposal Equipment, Mobile Refuse Collection and Compaction Equipment Safety Requirements, ANSI Z245.1-1992, and ensure the following: 1.Provide instruction and training in safe methods of work before assigning employees to work on a trash route. 2.Maintain records of the names of the employees trained and the dates of the training. 3.Ensure that no persons ride on truck steps while the vehicle is operating in reverse. 4.Require the use of reflective or high visibility vests. 29 CFR 1903.19(c)(2) abatement of the above violation was verified at the time of inspection, no certification is required.tion
