Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a crushing hazard from a car falling from the automotive lift: (a) Location - Automotive repair bay: On or about 08/11/00, employees working under a hydraulic car repair lift were exposed to crushing hazards by an automobile falling from the lift. The lift did not have adequate safety latches and safe lifting procedures were not in effect. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard is to: 1. Install all safety latches as required by the lift manufacturer. 2. Establish safe lifting procedures for the lifts. 3. Adequately train all employees and enforce safe lifting policies that are established in item #2 above. 4. Implement regular lift maintenance/inspection program.
