Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees: (a) In the parts department, the conveyor hoistway was not enclosed so as to prevent injury from inadvertent physical contact with the moving parts of the equipment. (b) At the main floor and upper level, the hoistway gates were not equipped with interlocks, exposing employees to injury from falls and inadvertent physical contact with the moving parts of the equipment. Feasible methods of abatement, among others, would be: 1. To install a door or gate that guards the full width of the hoistway opening and prevents physical contact with the moving parts of the equipment, as required by ANSI B20.1-1976, Rule 6.21.2.1. 2. To install mechanical locks and electric contacts to each hoistway door or gate so that they can be opened only when the carrier has stopped at that level and the carrier cannot be moved until the door or gate is closed, as required by ANSI B20.1-1976, Rule 6.21.2.2.6,
