Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees: (a) While employees were in the process of hoisting a unit of steel known as a centrifuge discharge hopper located in the dewatering building, the employer did not ensure that rigging shackles were properly seated in the saddle of the hook and that the hoist unit was properly centered over the load, resulting in the potential for employees being crushed or struck by a falling load. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is that sound rigging principles be practiced while hoisting all loads regardless of size, configuration or weight.ration
