Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being struck and/or being crushed by automobiles being serviced: Hazards-Operation/Condition-Accident-Hydraulic/electrical automotive lifts used for raising cars on a daily basis were not inspected weekly. No safety latches on some of the lifters Safety latches not working properly on the lifts that did have them installed/equipped. NOTE: pit residue in the bottom of the hydraulic lifts made the latches fail when the ram was deployed in the up position. Electrical lifts had broken cables they had to be deployed with pliers. Air valves were defective. Safety pins was defective due to excessive wear. North Side: a. Electrical Challenger Lift #1 No Safety latch cable was broken. b. Hydraulic lift-#2 No safety devices. c. Electrical Challenger Lift # 3 Safety latch cable was broken. d. Electrical Challenger Lift # 4 Safety latch cable was broken e. Hydraulic Lift # 5 No safety devices. f.Hydraulic Lift# 6 Safety latches not working properly covered with residue. g. Hydraulic Lift # 7 Safety latches not working properly covered with residue. South Side: a. Electrical Lift # 7- Safety Latch cable was broken. b. Electrical lift # 6- Safety Latch cable was broken. c. Hydraulic Lift # 4- Safety Latches not working properly covered with residue. Also the air valve was not working properly the spring was missing on the handle. d. Hydraulic Lift # 3- Safety latches not working properly covered with residue. e. Electrical lift # 2- Safety pin not working properly excess wear. f. Electrical Challenger lift # 1 - Safety Latch cable was broken. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHODS TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD ARE: 1. OBTAIN THE AUTOMOBILE LIFTS OPERATORS MANUAL, AND POST WITHIN THE SHOP AREA. 2. DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT A MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE TO INSURE THAT PROPER OPERATING PARAMETERS ARE MET. THESE INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: A. MANUFACTURES RECOMMENDATIONS ( SEE OPERATORS MANUAL). 3. PROVIDE EMPLOYEE TRAINING, ON HAZARD RECOGNITION AND SAFE OPERATION PROCEDURES AS WELL AS ENFORCEMENT OF THE PROCEDURES. 4.DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT A PROGRAM TO REMOVE DEFECTIVE LIFTS FROM USE.
