Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to falling loads from the failure of the spreader bars that were used to lift modular home ceilings and walls. (a)Side Wall Area - The spreader bar that was connected to the Coffing electric hoist and used to lift the side walls into place did not have a rated load capacity marked on it. This spreader bar was approximately ten (10) feet, six (6) inches in length and three (3) inches in diameter. The spreader bar had four (4) chains hanging from it that were used to connect the load to the spreader bar. (b)Roof Area - The spreader bar that was used to lift the ceiling into place did not have a load capacity marked on it. The spreader bar was made up of two (2) channel beams. Each channel beam was approximately twenty six (26) feet in length and was bolted together with six (6) lifting chains. "AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO RATE THE SPREADER BAR AND THEN MARK THE SPREADER BAR WITH IT'S RATED CAPACITY." VERIFICATION REQUIREDTION
