Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being struck by vehicular traffic: a)An employee was directing traffic without the use of paddles or signs. b)Training was not provided to the employee in the recognition of unsafe conditions in work zone safety. Among other methods, recognized and feasible means of abatement to correct this hazard is to: a) Ensure that employees who direct traffic are provided with suitable paddles or flags and provided with training that enables them to recognize and control hazards associated with vehicles; and, b) Comply with the applicable elements required by the Manual on Uniform Control Devices (Millennium Edition), June 2001 when performing work that affects highway and street traffic.
