Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) Lloyd Thompson Farm, Grafton, North Dakota, the hazard of employee(s) being crushed in that on or about January 23, 1991, and at times prior thereto, employee(s) were not trained to be competent in the safe operation of potato piler/conveyor systems. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard would be for the employer to provide employee training as recommended in the American National Standards Institute B20. 1-1972 standard, "Safety Standards for Conveyor and Related Equipment", section 5.25. The training would include, but not be limited to, knowledge of material flow, electrical and hydraulic controls, communication equipment, safety and warning devices, capacities and limitations of the equipment.
