Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CONFINED
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a)The employer failed to keep the workplace free from the hazard of an uncontrolled release of Muriatic acid from Tank #20 by not determining the interior condition of the fiberglass reinforced plastic tank in order to maintain the tank's mechanical integrity. ABATEMENT METHODS: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to conduct annual internal visual inspections of fiberglass reinforced plastic tanks to identify corrosion zones, aging damage, structural deficiencies and structural failure. Any entry into a fiberglass reinforced plastic tank shall be in accordance with permit-required confined space entry requirements.
