Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: On or before January 15, 1994, employees were exposed to the hazard of crushing when working between sling suspended loads from cranes and steel check stanchion chucks on No. 10 vulcanizer machine, splicer and lace machine and No. 10 repair press. Among others, some feasible and useful methods to correct these hazardous conditions would be: (1) Eliminate the platforms on the inside face of the chuck stanchions. (2) Install the platforms on the other 3 (three) sides of the stanchions where the employee could not be in the pinch point or under the load but could reach to rotate the chuck safely without being in the pinch point or under the load. (3) Provide a mechanical means such as push button operated double acting air cylinders or other to operate the locking ring devices on the chucks which would only operate to engage or retrieve when both ends of the mandrells are seated in the chuck's cavity.
