Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being struck by flying debris: a.On or about July, 7 1997, the employer had a line pressure greater than 100 pounds per square inch gauge (psig) used to transport compressed air for the pneumatic tools and spraying operations. This condition exposed employees to flying projectiles produced as a result of the possible fragmentation of the pipe because of fatigue caused by cold contents, and/or ambient temperatures and non- compatibility of pipe with its contents, etc. Among other methods, 3 feasible means of abatement would be: 1.An Acrylonitrite, Butadiene Styrene (ABS) pipe could be used. 2.Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe that is completely enclosed in a conduit or casing of sufficient strength to provide protection from external damage and deterioration. 3.Metal piping could be used. ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION IS NOT REQUIRED.
