Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which was free from the hazard of being struck or punctured by projectiles from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe. This hazard is likely to cause or likely cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of the pipe fragmenting or exploding. a.On or about May 22, 1997, the employer had a line pressure of 96 pounds per square inch (psi) used to transport compressed air for the pneumatic tools and spraying operations. Fragmentation of the pipe can occur because of fatigue cause by cold contents, and or ambient temperatures and non-compatibility of pipe with its contents, etc. Among other methods, 3 feasible means of abatement would be: 1. An Acrylonitrite, Butadiene Styrene (ABS) pipe could be used. 2. Polyvinyl vinyl chloride pipe (PVC) with that is completely enclosed in a conduit or casing of sufficient strength to provide protection from external damage and deterioration. 3. Metal piping could be used. ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION IS NOT REQUIRED.
