Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards of being crushed by an overturning crane: a.At the Inglis job site, employees were exposed to the hazards of a tipping condition while tracking a Caterpillar Side Boom 583 Pipelayer crane on a no- supporting surface underneath the machine. On or about May 25, 1994, four employees were seriously injured when soft dirt on an unstable right-of-way could not support the weight of a Caterpillar 583 Side Boom Pipelayer crane causing its right track to sink and produce an out-of-level condition inducing an upsurge of the boom forcing the boom cable to make contact with the 69 KV power line. One feasible and acceptable method, among others to correct this hazard is to construct a level, firm and stable supporting surface right-of-way and work area, and ensure that it will support the weight of a machine and its load. To avoid conditions which could lead to tipping when working on hills, banks or slopes. As specified in American National Standard Institute, ANSI B30.5-1968 Crawler, Locomotive, and Truck Cranes, Caterpillar Operator's Manual Safety Section, and Construction Industry Manufacturers Association Safety Manual.
