Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fractures and internal injuries from falls through and/or over swinging gates in floor perimeter railing. Among other methods one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to modify existing gates and install interlocks which will reduce or eliminate the likelihood of falling through or over the swinging gate: a) No. 15 PM, Finishing, No. 26 Supercalender - The swinging gates adjacent to the footboard on the west side of the supercalender were inadequate in that the gates were not interlocked so as not to operate unless the footboard was at the level of the platform. b) No. 15 PM, Finishing, No. 27 Supercalender - The swinging gates adjacent to the footboard on the west side of the supercalender were inadequate in that the gates were not interlocked so as not to operate unless the footboard was at the level of the platform.
