Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: (a) The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards of being crushed against solid objects while standing on the rear steps of a sanitation vehicle which was moving in reverse, on or about 4/21/93. A feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct the hazard would be to allow the employee(s) to ride in the cab of the sanitation vehicle or walk along the side of the vehicle. Also needed is a formal safety program on the hazards of solid waste pickup, a development of written safety rules and the enforcement of these
