Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: DUST&FUMES
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to hazards of fire and explosion: (a) Employees were exposed to the hazards of fire and explosion, resulting from the grinding of titanium parts which created sparks and titanium dust. The sparks may ignite the titanium dust and create fires and or explosions, especially in the dust collection equipment. The grinding of titanium parts was observed on or about 8/5/93. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard include but are not limited to the following: (1) Dust collection by means of suitable hoods or enclosures at each dust producing operation, such enclosures to be connected to a water precipitation type of separator, and the suction unit installed in such a way that the dust shall be converted to sludge without contact, in a dry state, with any high-speed moving parts. (2) Grinding in an atmosphere of either Helium or Argon.
