Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: EXPLOSION
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees: On or before January 18th, 1996, at the maintenance shop machine room, employees were exposed to fire hazards. Smoking was permitted in the machine room, where there were three drums of oil, an uncovered 1 gallon container of gasoline, 5 gallon containers of diesel fuel, and other combustible liquids outside of flammable storage cabinets or rooms, and no fire extinguishers nor automatic extinguishing means were available in the machine room. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct his hazard is to prohibit smoking in the machine room, keep containers of flammable liquids covered, keep flammable and combustible liquids in storage cabinets, and have available fire extinguishers in accordance with an emergency action plan or total evacuation plan.ation
