Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees: In the Shipping and Inspection Area, Upper Assembly Department, between the overhead conveyor line and employee work stationa, an employee was exposed to the hazard of being struck by boxes and packages, weighing up to 24 pounds, falling from the overhead conveyor approximately 8 feet above the floor level. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to comply with ANSI-B20.1-1987, Section 5.9.2(c) Safety Standard for conveyors and related equipment. Specific elements of the abatement program shall include, but not necessarily be limited to, installing spill guards and or pan guards, or the equivalent, for the overhead conveyors. They will catch, retain and/or contain any spills so that they can not fall onto employees in areas where they are required to work or walk.
