Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: GUARDING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: severe traumatic injuries secondary to untimely emergency response. (a) Location: Shredder/Cyclone Separator; Employees working near conveyors did not know the location of emergency stop devices. In an emergency situation employees would be unable to stop the conveyor which could significantly increase the severity of an in running nip point injury. One feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to instruct employees as to the location of emergency stop devices in accordance with ANSI B20.1 -1990. (b) The emergency stop device for the feed conveyor was inoperable in that the red contact button was missing. In an emergency situation employees would be unable to stop the conveyor which could significantly increase the severity of an in running nip point injury. One feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to conduct routine inspections and corrective maintenance to ensure guards and safety devices are functioning properly in accordance with ANSI standard B 20. 1-1990.
