Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: EXPLOSION
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to potential fire and explosion hazards while working in a magnesium chipping areas: a) B System chipping Line; the ITT Grinnell #3000 gate valve used to regulate magnesium powder into the B System pneumatic line was not calibrated and demarcated in relation to flow rate, June 29, 1990. b) B System Chipping Line: the B System Chipping Line was not equipped with an inert gas system, June 29, 1990. c) B System Chipping Line; the magnehelic pressure gauge located on the ductwork directly before the first fan in the system was not located in a position which was easily readable from the employee's operating station, August 28, 1990. d) B System Chipping Line; an alarm system was not present to warn employees in the event of a vaccum loss in the pneumatic transport line, August 28, 1990. FEASIBLE AND USEFUL METHODS OF ABATEMENT INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITD TO THE FOLLOWING: 1) Install, calibrate and demarcate a rotary metering valve (instance a) 2) Install and maintain an inert gas system (instance b) or as an alternative fire suppression systems, and explosion vents may be installed and maintained. 3) Relocate the instrumentation (instance c); 4) Install and maintain an alarm system (instance d).
