Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: BURNS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to hazards resulting from trapped-steam explosions, including but not limited to, severe burns from contact with molten steel. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following: 1)Establish a work practice whereby molds and "pig pots" are carefully examined and, if wet, dried prior to putting in the sand. 2)Store and transport the "pig pots" inside to avoid contact with moisture from the weather. 3)Put vents in the "pig pots" so that, if moisture is present, the steam produced by the addition of molten steel to the "pig pots" is not trapped and explosions are avoided.ns
