Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed: On or about 6/6/92 and at times prior thereto, employees were exposed to hazards of being struck by falling tree limbs. One or more acceptable abatement methods to correct the hazard would be to: 1) Consider the tree and the surrounding area for anything that may cause trouble when the tree falls. 2) Consider the shape of the tree. 3) Consider the lean of the tree. 4) Consider the wind force and direction. 5) Consider the decayed or other weak spots. 6) Consider the location of other persons. 7) Clear the work area and plan an escape route before any cutting is started. 8) Instruct each individual in his/her job assignment. 9) Clear all workers not directly involved in an operation out of the area. 10) Give an audible warning prior to the tree falling and all personnel in the area shall be safely out of range when the tree falls. 11) Persons shall be kept back from the butt of a tree that is starting to fall.
