Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: The hazard of being struck by moving vehicles. a) At United Parcel Service (UPS), Doraville, Pleasantdale Road location, employees were exposed to moving trailers which were driven in a rearward direction when the drivers view to the rear was obstructed. This condition existed on or about Aug 22, 1994 when an employee was struck by a moving vehicle. Among other methods, a feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to: 1) Install audible alarms which activate when the reverse gear is engaged; 2) Install strobe lights which activate when the reverse gear is engaged; 3) Assign guides to walk at the rear of the trailer and observe to insure a clear path, before signaling the driver to back the vehicle up; 4) Instruct vehicle operators to visually check any location where the view to the rear may be obstructed prior to moving in a rearward direction.
