Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being struck by a falling wall: WORKSITE: The employees, performing the manual lifting of a wooden wall panel, approximately 13 feet long by 8 feet wide having 2-inch x 6-inch studs were not adequately protected from the hazards posed by the falling panel. On or about 4/9/08, the wooden panel was displaced and fell backwards while being lifted and hit one of the employees. The employee sustained several injuries from the incident. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to: 1. Develop and implement procedures on the acceptable methods that must be followed when manually lifting a wall. 2. Instruct and train the employees in the procedures on acceptable methods to be followed. 3. Pre-plan the job to calculate the weight of the walls. 4. Conduct a pre-lift meeting to discuss the sequence of the lift. 5. Utilize other available engineering feasibility, technology and methods.gy
