Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a) Meineke Muffler Shop - Employees were exposed to the hazard od serious crushing injuries from the dropping of air operated hydraulic automotive lifts while working under vehicles replacing mufflers & brakes on the lifts. Safety locking devices (pins,latches or dogs) were nor operational or were not provided on the lifts in the service area. Feasible and acceptable methods among others to correct the hazard is to: 1. Install automatic mechanical safety locking devices on both lifts. 2. Instruct and train employees in the proper use of mechanical safety locking devices for pneumatic lifts. 3. Conduct periodic inspection of the lifts as recommended by the lift manufacturer to insure that the safety locking devices and all other components are in safe operating condition. 4. Post manufacturers operating manuals in the service area for reference. Reference: ANSI B 153.1 - 1990.
