Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: The hazard of being caught between the moving parts of an escalator and mail carts Location: 250 North Street White Plains NY 10625 - East Wing On or before 5/11/95, a) The employer did not follow the rules published by the Elevator/Escalator Safety Council by allowing employees to transport mail carts on the escalators. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THE HAZARD IS: To follow the rules published by the Elevator/Escalator Safety Foundation in their publication entitled "National Elevator Escalator Safety Awareness Week" 1) "Passengers only on escalators. No strollers, walkers or carts of any type". 2) "Use elevators instead of escalators when pushing a cart, stroller or walker, or when carrying packages".
