: Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to excessive heat: a)Santex Dryer Area - A dryer operator was exposed to excessive heat from the entry and take-off areas of the drying unit. The Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) was found to be 27.3 degrees Celsius (C). This was 1.022 times the Threshold Limit Value (TLV) found in the American Conference of Governmental Hygienists (ACGIH) Threshold Limit Values for Chemical Substances and Physical Agents and Biological Exposure Indices, 19931994. Samples were taken at the entry and take-off areas of the Santex Dryer. b)Compacting Area - A compacting machine operator was exposed to excessive heat from the FAB-CON compacting machine and the Santex Dryers. The Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) was found to be 27.2 degrees Celsius (C). This was 1.019 times the Threshold Limit Value (TLV) found in the American Conference of Governmental Hygienists (ACGIH) Threshold Limit Values for Chemical Substances and Physical Agents and Biological Exposure Indices, 1993-1994. The sample was taken at the operator position on the FAB-CON compacting machine, Serial Number 92235. FEASIBLE ENGINEERING CONTROLS MAY INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: 1. Institute a "Work-Rest" Regimen to allow employees time to recover from heat stress conditions. Provide and implement a formal heat stress program for affected employees in work area. 3. Provide and require employee wear of cooling vests or jackets while in these heat stress areas.
