Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to potential hazards of fires and/or explosions due to dust collection system not being designed, constructed, and maintained according to established safety and health standards. a. Panel Saw Area - Employees working in areas served by the dust collection system were exposed to fire and/or explosion hazards due to the dust collection system not being designed, constructed, and maintained properly, such as inadequate collection capacity resulting in dust buildup in the ducts and lack of a fire detection and suppressant system when air is recirculated back to the work area. ABATEMENT NOTE: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to design, construct, and maintain the dust collection system according to established safety and health standards. See "NFPA 664 Standard for the Prevention of Fires and Explosions in Wood Processing and Woodworking Facilities" for guidance. THE R. E. SERVICE CO., INC., WAS PREVIOUSLY CITED FOR A VIOLATION OF THIS OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH STANDARD SECTION 5(a)(1) OF THE ACT WHICH WAS CONTAINED IN OSHA INSPECTION NUMBER 17899386, CITATION NUMBER 1, ITEM NUMBER 1, ISSUED ON 5/4/92.
