Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fall hazards from catenary scaffolds: a) On or about 11/19/92, beneath the Louisiana Street Bridge over I-190. Employees were exposed to falls of approximately 13' 11" to the ground below from a 12 inch catenary scaffold pick while painting the bridge girders without any fall protection being utilized. Among other methods, a feasible and acceptable method of abatement is to provide and utilize safety belts, or the equivalent attached to a lifeline, and a 20 inch fabricated pick as stipulated by Section 20.1 and 20.6 of ANSI A10.8-1988, Scaffolding Safety Requirements.
