Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard:
29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): One or more methods of machine guarding was not provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Tyson Foods, Inc.; Curing Department; Lines 1-4: The employer is failing to ensure that the shields/guarding on the exit conveyors of the MAJA skinners Model# VB-500 were designed and/or constructed to prevent the operators from making incidental contact with the tooth rollers of the skinners. On or about July 23, 2015; an employee of Tyson Foods, Inc. was injured while attempting to free a pork belly that had become stuck as it was passing through the MAJA skinner of Line #1 in the Curing Department. The employee was able to remove/adjust the guard in order to reach in to the point of operation and made incidental contact with a tooth roller; which grabbed the employee's hand; pulling the employee's arm into the machine towards the tooth roller. Tyson Foods, Inc. was previously cited for a violation of this occupational safety and health standard or its equivalent standard 29CFR 1910.212(a)(1), which was contained in OSHA inspection number 951317, citation number 1, item number 2 and was affirmed as a final order on June 10, 2014; with respect to a workplace located at 67240 Main Street, Blountsville, AL 35031.
