Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a fall of 20 ft. from a single-point suspension scaffold. a) The Outer Bridge Crossing, Pier B, North Side - On or about 11/8/90, employees riding a single-point suspension scaffold were not connected to a lifeline by a safety belt and lanyard for the last 20 ft. above the bridge base. b) Outer Bridge Crossing, South Side - On or about 10/31/90, employee operating a sky climber was not wearing a safety belt and lanyard. One feasible and accepted method, among others, to correct this hazard is to use lifelines which extend to the ground and wear a safety belt with a lanyard connected to the lifeline.
