Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a) At the Salem Middle School, Salem, MA: On March 27, 1992, employee engaged in removing roof decking were exposed to the hazard of falling from the roof to the ground or floor below when working or standing near the edge where planks were being removed. NOTE: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to use mobile scaffolding positioned immediately adjacent and below the roof edge where planks are being removed. The scaffolding which could be re- positioned easily as the work progresses would eliminate the fall hazard as well as provide another safe working surface for deck removal operations.
