Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing injuries while dumping loads: (a)Jobsite at 4700 Hawthorne, Chubbuck, Idaho: On or about May 6, 1994, and at times prior thereto, an employee attempting to dump a load of building materials was positioned near the left rear corner of the raised truck bed apparently attempting to drop the loads by the use of the back load strap, causing a unit of materials to come off the side of the truck bed. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to require employees to remove load straps while truck bed is level and to stay in cab of truck during a dump cycle in accordance with hoist manufacturer's instructions.
