Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a) On or about May 24, 1994, and at times prior to that date, employees were exposed to the hazard of being crushed when moving railroad grain cars by hooking a log chain to the railcars and pulling the railcars with a farm type tractor. This method of moving railcars developed a hazardous condition when the pulling tractor was overtaken and overturned by the moving railcars. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to change the present method of moving railcars by pushing rather than pulling the railcars and to insure that all effected employees are trained in the recognition of the hazards associated with the moving of railcars.
