Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: BURNS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a) On or about May 14, 1993, and at times prior to that date, employees were exposed to the potential for serious burn injury while attempting to clear or unclog the Pyronics Balanced Zero Regulator, model 5101 - BZR, on the Surface Combustion Heat Treat Furnace located in the Mobile Maintenance Shop. Feasible and acceptable means of abatement to correct the hazard would include: 1. Elimination of all possible sources of ignition at those times when maintenance is to be performed on equipment fueled by materials that could be considered flammable or explosive. 2. Renewed emphasis should be placed on training all employees in the recognition and avoidance of unsafe or hazardous work practices and conditions. 3. Referencing the manufacturer's specified data on equipment prior to maintenance and repairs being performed to ensure any and all recommendations and instructions suggested by the manufacturer are adhered to.
